A remarkable experience in children playschool

Speech pathology student and the playschool

During my semester break, i have decided to take a job as a playschool teacher as it can prepare me for my future clinical session as i am a speech pathology student in UKM.

What i didnt notice is that the playschool that i am working now is specialised for child with special needs.

This is actually very challenging for me as i have no experience working as a nursery teacher before, plus i am a boy and not much centre in my country will hire a boy/men to work in this field.

After working at this school for sometime, it really widen my exposure in which that are actually a lot of things happening under our nose when we talk about children and yet, we misunderstood what they want, causing them to throw tantrum on us.

As a speech pathologist, from what i understand so far is that we are only concerning about their speech and the behaviour part is not what we should take care of.

But after working here, i learnt that all the fine motor and gross motor skill is very important for a child with special needs to communicate.

For instance, we have weekly sand play session to enhance their sensory function, fine motor skill and to help children with low self esteem to express their emotion.

According to my supervisor, if the child avoid to play with sand, mud, they will have very low self esteem when they grew up and facing some difficulties in their life. When i know the theory behind was really a wow factor.

we have weekly yoga session, physical exercise and water play weekly and all these are focusing in gaining back their confident to speak and carry out their occupation in my opinion.

I play among the children, and learnt a lot of precious knowledge in the process especially for child with autistic characteristic.

I can really say that after working here together with playtherapist, teacher for child with special needs, i really become a better person in this field as i will try to understand how the children, parent and normal person feel when discussing children with special needs.

At last, i have to say thankyou for my supervisors for helping me along the way. U ppl are the best!!
